C/T type: C.204

Notes: Class 4ab: a scarce coin with only 20 class 4ab Canterbury coins found in the Brussels Hoard - eight of them being from Nicole. Two types are documented for Nicole, the other type, with two examples in BH, having a pellet on the crossbar of the N in the 4th quadrant of the reverse legend. Three other moneyers had 4ab coins in the hoard: Gilbert, the Archbishops' moneyer (4), Ion (1), and William (7).

Obv: hENRICUS REX III

Rev: NIC/OLE/ONC/ANT  3rd quadrant N has a pellet on the crossbar... hence C.203 not C.204.

Class 4ab

Willem

Another example of C.206. This fragment spotted on Ebay - sold by a vendor who clearly failed to recognise it's scarcity. Obverse looks to be very similar to that of CNWM40001 above. Note the central fleur floating above the crown-band.

RIC: The Canterbury 4ab coins shown here all have about 13 or about 16 pellets per quadrant comprising the inner circle on the reverse.

Class 4ab

Gilbert (Gilbert of Bonnington, the Archbishop’s moneyer)

Obv: hENRICVS REX III - with pellet before III, note the unusually thin lettering and thin sceptre.   Mintmark 5.1

Rev: GIL/BER/TON/CAI - with pellet on N crossbar in 3rd quadrant.  Fourth quadrant is probably showing absence or weak strike of diagonal on a ligated N.

RIC: 13/?/14/13, Avg ~13

Class 4ab

Nicole

Obv: hENRICUS REX III   Mintmark 5.2

Rev: NIC/OLE/ONC/ANT  3rd quadrant N has a pellet on the crossbar.  RIC: ?/16/?/? - avg ~16

C/T type: C.203

Notes: Another example.  This one sold at Timeline auction, 30th November 2011,

Lot # 225.  Ex David Nelsen collection.

Class 4ab

Jon (John Terry)

Obv: hENRICUS REX III  REX to the left of the sceptre.  Central Fleur crown ornament, with pellet end ornaments. Mintmark unclear.

Rev: ION/ON/CAN/TER - Note that the Ns in 1st and 2nd quadrants are reversed. RIC: 13?/14/13?/14, avg ~ 13.5

C/T type: C.202

Notes: a rare class 4ab of Jon.  Only one of these coins was present in the Brussels Hoard. Pitted surface probably indicates a metal detecting find.
