Class 5a2

(or 5a2/4ab mule)

Nicole

Obv: hENRICUS REX III   Ball-tailed R, X2.  Round eyes.

Rev:  NIC/OLE/ONC/ANT - with  AN ligated.    Note the high number of pellets comprising the inner circle: 13+ per quadrant.  This suggests that the reverse may actually be from a class 4ab die, and that this coin is a mule, or possibly a very early 5a2 issue.

Notes: Although normally a quite common coin, this one is interesting due to the spelling error on the obverse; the C of hENRICUS is quite clearly an E on this coin.  Ex Brussels Hoard, ex C J Martin.

As a 5a2 Nicole coin this is one of the scarcer varieties.  Of the 285 5a2 coins in the Brussels Hoard, about a third (93 coins) were spelt "Nicole" on the reverse rather than "Hicole" and of these, almost all had the letters O and N ligated.  Just six coins had ON not ligated, and these six occurred in two varieties of three coins each depending upon whether or not there was a pellet on the last N.
If the reverse is actually a 4ab rather than 5a2 then it is a reverse die not recorded from the Brussels Hoard ("BH").  There were only eight BH 4ab coins recorded by Churchill and Thomas, and for the one in the Lockett sale there are no details of the reverse legend.  The seven other coins occur in two varieties - all spelt Nicole rather than Hicole but both have the ON ligated.  With so few specimens described, it is not statistically significant that this coin is not a direct die match to any of the seven known BH coins.
5a1 coins, with the half fleur crown ends, were not issued in Canterbury, and so 5a2 directly follows 4ab - with the focus of the coin re-design being the layout of the obverse it would not be unreasonable to expect that some 4ab reverse dies were used with the new 5a2 obverse dies.
