​The Long Cross Pennies of Henry III

It has been observed that some of the Irish Henry III pennies have an unusual elaborate font which so far I have only seen on the reverses of coins of various classes. This font may be characteristic of one particular die-cutter, and if this person was making dies in London, or elsewhere in England, rather than in Dublin then he was only working on Irish coins as this font type is not seen on the English series.  Another possibility, as suggested in Gerry Slevin's book, is that these are modern forgeries. The jury is still out.


On these pages I will collect together any images I can find of these coins, regardless of which class they appear on. As more examples become available we may be able to better understand these enigmatic coins.
