I have not yet observed any strong correlation between the type of S and the style of beard, though many more coins need to be examined to confirm this.

This is a large class with a number of variations which have not been formally sub-divided. There are particularly noticeable differences in the shape of the bust, the neatness of the beard and the shape of the letter "S".    From a limited sample of coins it appears that the wide bust types may be less abundant than the coins with narrower busts.
