London, Classes 3a2 to 3ab2

Sub-class 3bc normally has mintmark 4, the others in this group having mm 3, or 3* on 3a2.  Sub-class 3ab2 is the scarcest of these, and is distinguished by it's characteristic two flamboyant curved limbs on the non-symmetrical letter X (Top right/bottom left).

Data taken from Churchill and Thomas (2012) Brussels Hoard publication.

A Look at The Reverse Lettering - London, Class 3a2, Nicole

Class 3a2 - NIC/OLE/ONL/VND - and it's variants

Die cutters used, apparently at random,  an "N" or alternatively an "H" for the letter N throughout the voided long cross series. In looking at the statistics for the 3a2 coins of Nicole in the Brussels Hoard it seems that usually an N or an H alone was used - but that occasionally a mix of N and H is seen.

One wonders what was going on in the workshop that resulted in such mixtures?

Anyway, for this class/moneyer combination it is clear that all Ns are commonest, followed by all H pennies, and that coins with a mixture are scarcer.

In this dataset, all N comprises 63% of the coins, all H about 25%, and the remaining 12% is made up of mixed lettering.  Collectors may wish to look out for the latter.
