London, Class 3bc

Sub-class 3bc normally has mintmark 4, the others in this group having mm 3, or 3* on 3a2.  Sub-class 3ab2 is the scarcest of these, and is distinguished by it's characteristic two flamboyant curved limbs on the non-symmetrical letter X.

3bc coins were issued at London by Nicole and Henri, neither are particularly scarce.  They are characterised by having initial mark type 4, X type 2 and R type 1, and usually have ENR ligated.  There is a characteristic bust style, with some variation, and often but not always accompanied by a short neck.  Some coins have a 3b bust style, but are recognised as 3bc by virtue of their type 4 initial mark.
