5a3 coins are defined by sceptre, round eyes, X4 and R2. At London they were minted by Nicole, Henri, Davi and Ricard.
The small pellets, characteristic of the inner circle on the obverse and reverse of many class 4 coins, are also seen on some of the class 5a coins, including class 5a3. The majority of the 5a3 pennies have a RIC count of between 9 and 11 pellets per quadrant, whilst some have RIC counts of about 13-14, as often seen in class 4. We do not know if the lower RIC count coins are later than the others, or simply represent the differing styles of multiple die-makers.
Some 5a3 coins have short-cross style letters C and/or E, and examples may be seen here.
