Class 5c2/5c3 transition?

Nicole

Obv: hENRICUS REX ANG'. NR ligated.   R type 1, X type 4. Eyes are between the rounded form of 5b2 and the oval form of class 5c. (W/H ratio of 1.15 compared to a figure of about 1.39 typical of class 5c).   Central fleur disjointed which suggests class 5c3.  Pointed chin, with a double row of pellets for beard. The "S" has a pellet on it's lower limb as well as in the centre.

Rev: NIC/OLE/ONL/VND - with ON and ND ligated. Pellets on 3q/4q "N"s.  RIC: 8

Type not recorded in Brussels Hoard..

Notes: An interesting coin in that the disjointed central fleur suggests class 5c3, however Nicole supposedly finished production during the 5c2 period. This coin may be transitional between 5c2 and 5c3 and be one of the last types struck by Nicole.

Ignoring the highest and lowest observations, we see that the majority of eye W/H ratios are in the range 1.25 - 1.58.

London, Class 5c2

Class 5c coins are recognised by their oval almond-shaped eyes rather than round ones.  5c1 and 5c2 have a normal central fleur, whereas the central fleur on 5c3 is dis-jointed.  5c1 and 5c2 are distinguished by the shape ofthe letter "R", with 5c1 being a ball-shaped tail (R2), and 5c2 is wedge shaped (R1).

The charts below are based on data for coins in the Brussels Hoard only; minor Numbers of 5c1/2 & 5c2/1 coins have been combined with 5c1 and 5c2 respectively.   The chart show 5c1 to be scarcer than 5c2 and 5c3.    5c obverses muled with 5d reverses are even scarcer.

Some of the moneyers were not active for all 5c sub-classes:

Nicole: 5c1/5c2 only, Ion: from 5c3 onwards,   Walter and Willem : from 5c2 onwards.
