Die cutters used, apparently at random,  an "N" or alternatively an "H" for the letter N throughout the voided long cross series. Here we are looking at the statistics for the 5b2 coins of Nicole in the Brussels Hoard. For this common class, the use of all "N"s was prevalent - with over two-thirds of the 1809 coins belonging in this group.

Unlike class 3a2, we see that all "H" s are very scarce indeed. There are also a few scarce coins where the letter "I" was used.  The graph indicates the relative scarcity of the different lettering combinations.

Was the use of different letters random, or does it have some significance?   Further research is needed to answer this.

Collectors should particularly look out for any pennies other than those with NNN or HNN.

For the London mint, Churchill and Thomas (2012) have not recorded the use of short cross letters on any class 5c coins they studied from the Brussels Hoard. They did provide data which shows that short cross letters on either or both sides of the coin are five times as common (in percentage terms) on class 5a Brussels Hoard coins than in class 5b.  About 8.4% of the class 5a coins have one or more short cross letters, whereas only about 1.7% of the 5b coins have any S/C letters.  In absolute numbers, there were about 126 5a coins and about half as many 5b coins.
