York Mint

The mint in York was set up prior to the Viking invasions of England and coins continued to be produced there throughout the Saxon and Norman periods - with the Archbishop claiming rights to two dies until the late 13th century.

During the production of Henry III pennies, in addition to the Archbishop's moneyer Thomas, there were four moneyers appointed to the Royal mint. These being Alan Sampson, Jeremy Louth, John Selby and Rayner Taliator. The Royal moneyers produced pennies from class 2b onwards, but very little after class 3b. The archbishop's moneyer Thomas has no coins recorded in the Brussels Hoard until class 3a2, but was most prolific issuing class 3b and 3bc  pennies, and he is the only moneyer recorded for class 3c in the Brussels Hoard.
